Situatie in Nederland

The year 2020 might look hard but Nokia is doing well
Marin | 27/06/2020 | Networks, NOKIA | 0 Comments

The year 2020 has been pretty hard on human civilization, and how the situation is developing seems that we might be expecting to see a real Godzilla this summer. But, things are not so bad for Nokia, which is doing rather well in the networking business. The 5G era started well with the global ban of Huawei but later turned out that Nokia’s chipset strategy could be wrong what caused some delays and extra R&D expenses, but things are coming to normal these past few days or weeks.

Nokia announced that it is becoming the first big networking vendor to launch commercially available open Radio Access Network or O-RAN. While the current RAN systems are closed, this could turn out to be advantageous for Nokia, which might not earn as much but could attract more buyers since they could build their RAN from different manufacturers. O_RAN market share is currently at 1%, but that number might change rapidly in the near future, which means that Nokia could get a share of a cake before its main competitors Ericsson and Huawei. Nokia is calling its O-RAN the 5G Airscale Cloud RAN, and this solution has already been commercially tested on a sub 6GHz band with a fully cloudified base station. The find out more about this topic, I suggest reading an excellent post by LightReading, and the official Nokia Press release.

Nokia has also been selected by National Broadband Ireland (NBI) to deploy a fiber broadband network for 540,000 rural premises in the Republic of Ireland. Nokia will be the key supplier for IP routing and optical networking technology, and will also provide an end-to-end fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) solution.

Also, Nokia has been selected by TOYOTA Production Engineering to create a 5G private wireless network, and together with Ericsson will be creating Singapore’s main 5G network. TOYOTA will have a private 5G network to support support IoT devices, equipment digitization and visualization. In Singapore, the joint venture between Starhub and M1 said it selected Finland’s Nokia as the preferred technology partner to build its 5G network. The plan is to cover the whole island with a standalone 5G network by 2025.

This is all affecting the price of Nokia stock which is now 3% higher and looking good. Nokia is still pretty much dedicated to connecting people, but while we do miss their true dedication to smartphones, Nokia’s energy is now built in networks which are making all of us connected.

Things are looking good for Nokia, and the next 6 months of 2020 will be interesting since the new CEO and Board are taking the rudder of the company. It will be interesting to see if there is going to be some new information about the larger presence of Nokia in the consumer market.

Nokia 7.2 is the best selling Nokia smartphone in India since May 2020
I. A. | 28/06/2020 | NOKIA, Phones | 22 Comments

Following the Government of India’s guidelines, Nokia Mobile began its services in India from May 4, after about 40 days of temporary shutdown due to the COVID-19. After resuming the online sales, HMD Global observed a shift in the buying pattern among the buyers.

Nokia 7.2, a mid-segment smartphone sold the most among the Nokia smartphones, followed by Nokia 3.2 and Nokia 2.3, said Sanmeet Singh Kochhar, Vice President – India & MENA (Middle East and North Africa), HMD Global. Similarly, IDC estimates that the shipments of smartphones under ₹ 10000, are expected to dip, and even the feature phone market is expected to experience a downhill in H2 2020.

Apart from this, there is also a shift in sentiment of the Indian smartphone buyers from the Chinese brands to the non-Chinese ones. Ajey Mehta, Vice President – Corporate Business Development, HMD Global in the Horasis India Meeting said that companies are now looking for a “China-plus one” strategy, which poses an attractive opportunity for India to become a big manufacturing hub.

He feels that COVID-19 has accelerated this process and that 5G in the future will further enhance the growth opportunities of manufacturing in the Indian market. He also added that mobile phone manufacturers require a global supply chain system to deliver products, so they have to rely on other places for manufacturing, and relying on a single source or country for manufacturing is not viable.

Excluding Nokia 9 PureView and Nokia 8 Sirocco, all the Nokia phones that sell in India are manufactured in India. Currently, HMD Global has four ODMs (Original Design Manufacturers) in India, namely, DBG Technology (Haryana), MCM Telecom Equipment (Uttar Pradesh), Rising Stars Mobile, and TSMT Technology, both in Tamil Nadu.

As per BIS certification, Nokia 5.3 in India will be or is being produced by DBG Technology. We can expect its launch in India soon. It will also help Nokia Mobile reduce the void created due to the lack of a smartphone in the range of ₹ 10000 (€120, US$130) to ₹ 15000 (€180, US$200).

"...a shift in sentiment of the Indian smartphone buyers from the Chinese brands..."

Taiwan Mobile (TWM) preferred Nokia over Huawei in a $450 million 5G deal
J.K. | 30/06/2020 | Networks, NOKIA | 3 Comments

Nokia has won a major 5G contract with Taiwan Mobile (TWM) worth approximately $450 million. Taiwan Mobile is the second-largest telecommunications company in the country just behind Chungwa Telecom.

Nokia will be supplying the Taiwanese operator with 5G RAN, 5G Core, and 5G IMS solutions in the next three years. This three-year framework contract involves deployment of 5G non-standalone, with the aim to migrate to 5G standalone infrastructure by the end of the contract. It will also provide digital design and deployment services to the operator.

“We have enjoyed a long-standing partnership with Taiwan Mobile, supporting them in the delivery of 2G, 3G, 4G networks and we look forward to continuing this in the 5G era as their sole supplier,” said Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia in a press release.

“Our end-to-end portfolio, global reach, and commitment to a more sustainable world will help Taiwan Mobile execute its ambitious 5G strategy and plans for a fast roll-out.”

The pressure against China in the 5G race led Nokia to exit China’s 5G radio access market after failing to get a share of major China Mobile contracts. This multi-year contract with Taiwan Mobile will help the company’s 5G business which has been under pressure in the past few years against competitions like Huawei and Ericsson.

According to Jamie Lin, President at Taiwan Mobile, the two companies will work together to promote “Super 5G Strategy.” This will integrate multiple vertical applications including smart e-commerce, smart stadium, smart healthcare, and smart manufacturing. These smart applications are aligned to Nokia’s long-standing commitment to sustainability.

During the United Nations’ climate summit last year, Nokia joined the group of 87 companies committed to recalibrating existing science-based climate targets in line with the 1.5°C warming scenario. As a result, the company has delivered zero-emission products to over 150 customers globally and modernized existing customer base-station sites in 2019, resulting in a 46% less energy consumption.
