Shares of Weight Watchers International Inc. WTW, +7.37% jumped more than 10% late Thursday after the company reported first-quarter sales and earnings well above Wall Street forecasts and said it ended the quarter with the most subscribers ever. Weight Watchers said it earned $39.1 million, or 56 cents a share, in the quarter, compared with $10.7 million, or 16 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Revenue rose to $408.2 million, from $329.1 million a year ago. Analysts polled by FactSet had expected earnings of 6 cents a share on sales of $392 million. The company said it ended the quarter with 4.6 million subscribers, the highest in its history and an increase of 1 million compared to a year ago. The company also raised its 2018 per-share earnings guidance to a range between $3 and $3.20, compared with a previous guidance of EPS between $2.40 and $2.70. "Based on our strong performance and continued momentum, we expect our annual revenue to grow by almost 20%," Chief Financial Officer Nick Hotchkin said in a statement. Shares ended the regular session down 4%.

De internationale dieetgroep Weight Watchers gaat haar focus verbreden. Ze wil de klemtoon verleggen van afslankproducten en -behandelingen naar welzijn en wellness. De herpositionering gaat gepaard met een naamsverandering. Weight Watchers wordt WW.

'Er is niks mis met de naam Weight Watchers', zegt CEO Mindy Grossman in Financial Times. 'Maar we willen onszelf presenteren als een wellnessmerk. Dat gaat over meer dan lichaamsgewicht.'

De Amerikaanse tv-beroemdheid Oprah Winfrey, die sinds 2015 een belang van 8 procent in Weight Watchers heeft, heeft op de veranderingen aangestuurd.

Het bedrijf werd in 1963 opgericht door de New Yorkse huisvrouw Jean Nidetch en bouwde een business rond afslankmethodes en dieetproducten. In 1999 kwam Weight Watchers in handen van de investeringsmaatschappij Artal van de Belgische zakenfamilies Ullens de Schooten en Wittouck. Dat waren belangrijke aandeelhouders van Tiense Suiker, tot ze het in 1989 verkochten aan het Duitse Südzucker.

In 2001 werd Weight Watchers op de New Yorkse beurs geïntroduceerd, maar Artal behield een belangrijke participatie. Die werd de voorbije jaren geleidelijk teruggeschroefd. Met een belang van 22,3 procent is Artal nog altijd de grootste aandeelhouder van Weight Watchers. Winfrey komt op de tweede plaats.

De families Wittouck en Ullens de Schooten kochten Weight Watchers in 1999 voor 700 miljoen euro. Vandaag is het 4,85 miljard dollar (4,10 miljard euro) waard.

Koersval Weight Watchers kost Tiense Suikerfamilies kwart miljard

De dieetgroep Weight Watchers ziet de beurswaarde met bijna 30 procent afslanken na een zwak kwartaal. De Belgische zakenfamilies Ullens de Schooten en Wittouck, voormalige aandeelhouders van Tiense Suiker, verliezen 255 miljoen euro door de koersval.


Het welnessbedrijf Weight Watchers zag in het derde kwartaal 300.000 klanten vertrekken. Zo'n 4,2 miljoen klanten zijn nu aangesloten bij het bedrijf dat afslankmethodes en dieetproducten aanbiedt. Het afslankbedrijf kwam ook met de omzetcijfers onder de verwachtingen uit. Beleggers zijn een krimp van het klantenbestand niet meer gewend. Het aandeel was tot donderdagavond sinds begin dit jaar gestegen met 55 procent.


Analisten waren negatief verrast door de cijfers. 'De groei vertraagt en het is de eerste keer sinds het bedrijf opnieuw begon te groeien dat het zijn prognoses neerwaarts bijstelt,' zegt Jason English, analist bij Goldman Sachs. 'Dat geeft ons niet veel vertrouwen.'


De koersval is slecht nieuws voor de Belgische zakenfamilies Ullens de Schooten en Wittouck. Dat waren belangrijke aandeelhouders van Tiense Suiker, tot ze het in 1989 verkochten aan het Duitse Südzucker. Hun vermogen slinkt met zo'n kwart miljard euro. Via de investeringsmaatschappij Artal hebben de families een belang van 22,17 procent in Weight Watchers.
