Someone on the ground in China wrote:

"EV are heavily subsidized in China, you get around $10k in cash back from government when you buy an EV in China.

$10k is only for EV with shorter range, the longer range EV (like a Tesla) have $20k subsidy

EV in China also enjoy many other policy subsidies like:

* priority registration (Many major cities in China limits car registration using a lottery system to limit number of cars on the road).
* no sales tax
* no car tax
* first hour parking free at public parking"

$20k subsidy for long-range EVs? Wow, imagine the $40k Model 3 or Chevy Bolt in China! (but I am sure these subsidies/policies will be adjusted each year as new models are introduced in the Chinese market)

Tesla’s giant battery in Australia reduced grid service cost by 90%

How many battery gigafactories will our world eventually need?

If I'm not mistaken, they will stop these subsidies in 2020. Until then, they will be phased out annually.
They also increased the minimum limit for low range subsidies (this year I think).

The Chinese government will throttle this every couple years.

One thing we know for sure: they want electric vehicles to: 1) clean up the air, 2) jobs (domestic & export EVs)

If they don't deliver on 1 & 2, the people will riot and then there will be political instability.

Meanwhile I live in a country where my president wants more coal. When there is a riot in front of the White House I will join them.

CO2 crossed 410 ppm. Hopefully we are not too late in our attempt to halt and reverse this.

Fossil fuels subsidized by $10m a minute, says IMF

"Fossil fuel companies are benefiting from global subsidies of $5.3tn (£3.4tn) a year, equivalent to $10m a minute every day, according to a startling new estimate by the International Monetary Fund."

Off topic. A very good article about Falcon 9, SpaceX and Elon Musk.

"In the early 2000s, Musk was told he could never privately finance an orbital rocket. Then, he was told it was madness to try to land them on a boat. And then, he heard how foolhardy it was to try to strap three rockets together and light 27 engines at the same time. Elon Musk does not care all that much to hear about his madness.

Perhaps it is mad for SpaceX to work feverishly to obsolete its Falcon 9 rocket, which it has spent a decade perfecting. But this was not a company founded to appease shareholders, plural. It was founded to appease a single shareholder. And he wants to go to Mars, damn it."

Looks like above data is already obsolete.

Benchmark’s @sdmoores calls LG Chem’s expansion plan “incredible” as the lithium ion battery major expands from 10GWh to 60GWh in a 2 year period:

https://twitter.com/benchmarkmin/status ... 7070028800

LG Chem going from 10 GWh to 60 GWh in two years (2017-2019) would be STUNNING, but I was not able to find any press information about this. Benchmark is reputable so we will keep an eye out for this.

(reminder: Tesla's Gigafactory will produce 35 GWh when it reaches full capacity)

Chinese has been keeping Korean cell makers out of China:

http://wardsauto.com/engines/chinese-ph ... -overtones

Last year's excuse was THAAD, in future years it could be anything. CATL, which is owned by the Chinese military, as well as other Chinese battery makers may find ways to give the Koreans a hard time. This is one reason why LG Chem did the JV with Huayou for both raw materials as well as to produce cathode powders in China.

Korean EV Battery Manufacturers are in Fierce Competition

“You will see vehicles equipped with our NCM 811 batteries in 2018,” said LG Chem president Lee Woong-beom

http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/art ... dxno=19301

I wonder if LG Chem's NCM 811 will make it to the GM Chevy Bolt by the end of 2018 and how that will affect its range (currently 238 miles, or 383 km).

By 2020 this car (and others) will have range of 300 miles (482 km) at the same price point or lower. Pretty amazing.

The death of ICE is clearly visible today.

I am very certain the adoption rate of pure electric will not be linear, it will be an S curve for sure.
