Hyundai launches Kona Electric CUV in the US with range of approximately 250 miles in 2H of 2018

But it will be a compliance car with limited volume just like the Chevy Bolt is.

We will see many compliance EVs like this one in the next 24 months. This is because the more they sell the more money they will lose, so volume will be limited and they will focus on ZEV states.

I am not sure how this will unfold in Europe in the next two years, probably about the same.

Understanbly, and unfortunately, legacy automakers hate electric cars.

I wonder if LG Chem is the battery supplier?

For the average consumer, cars are emotional buys.

For trucking companies, trucks are economic buys.

That is, as soon as it makes economic sense, trucking companies will switch from ICE to electric.

Not sure if they will recycle the cathode material themselves. There is no info about what they will be recycling...

In case you guys have not seen this regarding hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNV8qi_rJBg

https://insideevs.com/tesla-ceo-elon-mu ... ly-stupid/

I tend to believe EM and JB Straubel when it comes to technical knowledge (about batteries and HFC)

We all can see one thing: There are basically zero HFC filling stations anywhere and it will be crazy expensive to construct them everywhere. Meanwhile electricity is everywhere (and often very cheap), literally in every residential and commercial building.

It's really amazing how much time, money and effort Toyota has sunk into hydrogen. To this day they don't have any big EV plans.

I live not far from Google's multiple campuses in Mountain View and Sunnyvale, CA. They are constantly adding large buildings with large garages or parking lots. In all new garages and parking lots they construct, they have hundreds of charging ports in each.

More and more I see Chevy Bolt and Tesla drivers charge their EVs for free M-F at work, and they don't bother plugging in at night at home (because their EV range is over 200 miles, or 320 km, so they don't need to). This is a big deal for TCO calculations vs. an ICE car. I suspect more and more we will see this phenomenon all around the world as long-range EVs rolls out, many people will be able to charge their EVs for free at work M-F. Electricity is cheap and getting cheaper and cleaner all the time. It only costs the employer $3-4 per EV per day, so they are happy to provide this benefit. It's win win win: win for the employee, win for the employer, win for the environment.

Nissan Leaf came out 2010. Model S came out 2012.

Maybe we can think of 2017 as year zero, when both the Chevy Bolt and Model 3 came out (~ $35k with 200+ miles of range).

Observing the chart below, it's going to take a while for EVs to reach 50% in the U.S. Maybe 2035? Different countries will be different of course.

However there is an inflection point, at $100/kWh, when TCO of EVs become lower than ICE. Probably in about 3-5 years.
