Mondiale staalproductie omlaag

ArcelorMittal prepares September BF restart in Dunkirk
ArcelorMittal confirmed that it is ramping up operations at its idled BF3 blast furnace in Dunkirk, north of France, to target a full production restart in early September.
The furnace was idled, together with BF2 in April, following the spread of coronavirus in Europe and the negative impact on steel demand. The Dunkirk integrated site has since only operated using one blast furnace (BF4).
Local media noted that, following the restart of BF3, a number of workers are also expected to come back to the mill, lifting occupancy back to 70% from the 50% level registered until July. Nevertheless, the full recovery of activity at the plant is not yet planned for 2020 as BF2 will remain temporary idled, probably into 2021.
Meanwhile further south in France, at the integrated site of Fos-sur-Mer, the idled blast furnace could also be restarted in autumn to boost further the company’s output as demand picks up. While the possibility of the restart is being discussed by trade unions, sources close to the company said that a final decision and timeline has not yet been fixed.

thyssenkrupp upbeat about B2B portal for distribution
One year after the launch of its B2B portal, Germany’s largest steel distribution group thyssenkrupp Schulte gives a positive status report on its e-commerce activities.
"In the past six months, the number of registered customers has almost tripled,“ Kallanish hears from the company. Sales growth via the B2B portal also shows a positive upward trend, reaching new monthly peaks, tk Schulte says. In order to improve the services, tk Schulte is in communication with customers on the possibilities and advantages of using the purchasing web shop.
"The intensive exchange allows us to individually identify the right channel with the maximum customer benefit. In this way we can support our customers specifically in their digital transformation and drive digital innovations together with them," says Michael Bäuerlein, the company’s head of digitalisation and e-commerce. Additional comfort functions, such as retrieving or managing various documents themselves – from delivery notes to certificates – will be possible in the future, he says.
The B2B portal of tk Schulte is one part of the omnichannel concept for digitalisation which its parent group thyssenkrupp Materials Services is pursuing. Last year, the group also integrated artificial intelligence (AI) "Alfred" into its business processes.

Thyssenkrupp commits to DRI for future steelmaking
Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe is banking on direct reduced ironmaking as the preferred technology for steel production, in combination with other steps to reduce and ideally avoid CO2.
Earlier this year, outgoing ceo Premail Desai brought up DRI as the way to go for cleaner steel (see Kallanish passim). Meanwhile, the company has made official that it intends to build its first commercial-scale DRI plant in the mid-2020s.
“The development of direct reduction plants (DR plants) represents a key change in steel production,” the company states. Its DRI plants will operate on the basis of hydrogenous gases and produce solid DRI rather than molten pig iron, it declares.
The sponge iron will initially be melted in the existing blast furnaces, thyssenkrupp Steel says. The blast furnace will act as a melting unit which will use less energy and help lower CO2 emissions.
The path towards DRI will be marked by the use of hydrogen as a reducing agent in the blast furnace instead of carbon, a development that was launched in November last year. Parallel to that, the company is pursuing further use of CO2 produced in steelmaking through carbon capture and usage (CCU) by way of its proprietary Carbon2Chem technology.
On Friday, the company will present its project plan for the conversion to DRI to Germany’s federal economy minister Peter Altmaier, who is visiting the company’s production site in Duisburg.

Hyundai gains hot stamping technology from Arcelormittal (01/09)
South Korea steelmaker Hyundai Steel has entered into a licensing agreement with ArcelorMittal on the use of hot stamping products and processes, making it the first producer to get this technology in South Korea.
Hyundai Steel said in July it had signed a patent authorisation letter with ArcelorMittal, which holds the patent for the hot stamping technology. After this agreement comes into effect, Hyundai Steel's hot stamping products can be produced and sold in Korea, China and the ASEAN countries without risk of patent infringement.
Hyundai Steel currently has the largest hot stamping mills in Korea, including 22 production lines in Yesan and two lines in Ulsan. Two lines are expected to be commissioned by the firm’s Czech subsidiary at the end of this year. Hyundai sees the agreement as the cornerstone of its expansion of hot stamping product sales in overseas markets.
In terms of automotive industry applications, hot-stamped products reduce body weight by -25%, lower maintenance costs, and reach a maximum strength of 1,800MPa.

ArcelorMittal to restart Gijon blast furnace (02/09)
ArcelorMittal will temporarily resume production at blast furnace A at its Gijon plant in northern Spain. The furnace was idled in April due to the fall in demand associated with the coronavirus pandemic.
Preparatory work to restart the BF will commence this week to make sure the equipment is operational by the end of September. "The decision has been taken due to the need to ensure supplies to customers during the revamping of a blast furnace at ArcelorMittal Gent in Belgium," the company says in a note.
The restart of the furnace in Spain comes days after the company confirmed the restart of one blast furnace in northern France and the possible restart of another in the south of the country.
In addition, ArcelorMittal also confirms it will reactivate its investment project in northern of Spain that was postponed in 2019. This involves the coke-oven battery #2, the coke-oven injection of gas in BF B, and other components.
The company adds, nevertheless, that these investments could also be carried out under a single blast furnace operation, leaving the outlook unclear. "ArcelorMittal's management maintains a cautious approach as regards a potential recovery of normal production levels, due to the uncertainty that still exists as a consequence of the economic crisis, aggravated by the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic," the company says.

ArcelorMittal banks on 'unprecedented' demand for packaging steel (04/09)
During the demand crisis that hit Europe following the Covid-19 outbreak, the steel packaging sector outperformed most other steelconsuming sectors. ArcelorMittal, a leader in the supply of steel for can-making and packaging in Europe, says it stepped up production at its plants to serve the industry that faced a number of supply problems.
“The lockdowns implemented in Europe meant that there were significant disruptions to the food supply chain,” the company observes.
“At the same time, global demand for canned food reached unprecedented levels very quickly. That required an immediate response from canmakers, fillers, and steelmakers such as ArcelorMittal.”
“The long lead times and lack of flexibility offered by overseas producers were not an option, so most canmakers turned to local packaging steel suppliers such as ArcelorMittal,” confirms Stéphane Tondo, ArcelorMittal’s chief marketing officer for packaging and electrical steels. “That meant ArcelorMittal’s mill teams had to quickly adjust our production lines so they could meet the demand.”
The company produces packaging steel in France, Italy, Spain and Belgium. Its proximity to canmakers proved to be strategic in this instance, and in future the lesson learned during the coronavirus pandemic is expected to also shape the industry.
“Only a local supplier with the flexibility and presence of ArcelorMittal can offer the level of service customers require in a crisis such as this,” Tondo continues. “We offered short lead times and late specifications, enabling customers to quickly respond in a rapidly evolving market situation. That is simply impossible with an overseas steel supplier.

ArcelorMittal Italia extends layoffs, workers strike (08/09)
ArcelorMittal Italia has told unions and Italian authorities it will extend temporary layoffs for a further nine weeks starting from 14 September. The layoff extension has been granted by the government to all Italian companies in response to the Covid-19 crisis.
The new layoffs affect almost 8,150 employees including production workers, office workers and managers at the company’s main steelworks in Taranto. ArcelorMittal Italia told unions the extension is necessary due to the persisting reduction in economic activity caused by the national pandemic emergency.
The Taranto works is producing at minimum capacity, with 70% of equipment mothballed. The plate mill was idled on 1 August, unions say. This follows another temporary stoppage this summer of the cold rolling mill. The tube mill is also idled and meltshop no. 1 has been dismantled to recover spare parts for meltshop no.2.
Unions are responding to the announcement of the layoff extension with a 24-hour strike at the cold rolling area. This follows another strike at the plate mill area on 4 September.
The company extended layoffs in July and then again in August (see Kallanish passim). Ordinary layoff schemes have overlapped with the new Covid-19 layoffs. ArcelorMittal Italia declined to comment.

ArcelorMittal Italia continues upgrade works despite uncertainty (09/09)
ArcelorMittal Italia is carrying out maintenance and renovation work at its main Taranto plant despite speculation it will break the lease contract for the former Ilva. The company completed the replacement of converter exhausts at meltshop no.2 during the August summer break.
Workers in the maintenance department and contractors from the area of Taranto were employed to complete the complicated installation of 26 tonnes of structure at a height of 90 metres. The new exhausts will last for 20 years, the company explains.
Talks continue between the government and ArcelorMittal in an effort to find an agreement, retain the Italian investment and weather the current demand crisis linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. The company will extend temporary layoffs for most of its Taranto employees for a further nine weeks starting this month. The layoff extension has been granted by the government to all Italian companies in response to the pandemic crisis.
Trade unions, meanwhile, remain concerned by the fact the mill is still working at minimum utilisation, with 2020 expected to see crude steel output of below 4 million tonnes

ArcelorMittal further raises longs offers in EU (14/09)
ArcelorMittal is currently implementing a series of price increases for new orders of long products in Europe, following th recent spike in raw material costs globally, we learn from sources in the market.
Since July the company increased most of its longs offers by €30/tonne ($36); now a further offer increase is being applied due to the continued recovery of the market. Sources note that sections and merchant bar clients should expect a further €30/t increase on new orders; rebar will be offered at €500/t delivered and wire rod mesh quality at €490/t delivered.
High-grade wire rod contracts are also expected to be impacted by the latest increase. Fourth-quarter contracts will be offered at €60/t above the levels agreed for Q3, sources observe.
All sources confirm demand is picking up across Europe, and it is understood ArcelorMittal mills are well booked into Q4.
Since the beginning of Q3 ArcelorMittal and other European steelmakers have been busy announcing offer increases for both long and flat finished products. The raw materials price rally in China and Turkey, though, has accelerated this trend since the end of August.
Price indices show northern European rebar levels have recovered almost €30/t since the lows registered in August.

ArcelorMittal plans large job cuts in Luxembourg
ArcelorMittal has announced it is starting a period of consultations to cut some 570 jobs at its units in Luxembourg.
According to local trade unions, two thirds of the cuts will directly impact production sites, while the rest will be in administration.
In Luxembourg the company mainly produces long products at the sites of Belval, Differdange and Rodange, employing almost 4,000 people.
“In order to ensure the long-term future of our organization, we have reached the conclusion that we have to take further cost-saving measures,” Roland Bastian, ArcelorMittal head of country in Luxembourg, said on Friday.
“Today, we have announced that, regrettably, around 570 jobs at ArcelorMittal sites and offices in Luxembourg will be impacted,” he continued. “Different segments will be affected to different extents and we will review and discuss this in detail in the consultation sessions which are foreseen with our social partners.”
"Automotive production in Europe collapsed in the second quarter by 53%, and an unprecedented 26% decline in European automotive production is expected for the year as a whole,” ArcelorMittal observes. “Construction sites and new projects were also abruptly put on hold.”
“Also, in the second quarter, activity in the construction sector dropped by 15% in the euro zone compared to the same period of time in 2019, with few signs of a construction sector recovery on the way," the company adds

ArcelorMittal reveals roadmap to Dunkirk decarbonisation
ArcelorMittal is planning to cut its Dunkirk steelworks’ CO2 emissions by -33% by 2030. This is in line with its plan announced earlier this year to reach carbon neutrality on a global level by 2050, Kallanish learns from the company.
In a presentation on Dunkirk’s decarbonisation project to French industry minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the company revealed its roadmap to operating a green blast furnace. This will see steelmaking gas recycling replace fossil fuels and reduce emissions by -17%.
The plant will also capture CO2 to purify and liquify it, before reusing or storing it. The capture and restock project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by -8%. This will be done by doubling the plant’s current amount of recycled steel to 2 million tonnes/year without consuming more energy, ArcelorMittal explains.
“With these concrete developments, ArcelorMittal is committed to the decarbonisation of its steel production and the circular economy,” the firm states. “We are therefore fully in line with the objectives of the French government plan “France Relance” which accelerates the transformation of the French industry in terms of sovereignty and decarbonisation.”
Last month the company confirmed it is ramping up operations at its idled blast furnace no.3 in Dunkirk to target a full production restart in early September. The furnace was idled, together with BF2 in April, following the spread of coronavirus in Europe and the negative impact on steel demand. The Dunkirk integrated site has since only operated using one blast furnace, BF4.
Earlier this year ArcelorMittal announced its plan to cut CO2 emissions at all its European plants by -30% by 2030.

ArcelorMittal postpones Fos-sur-Mer blast furnace restart
ArcelorMittal confirms it has decided to postpone the planned restart of blast furnace no.1 at its plant in Fos-sur-Mer, southern France.
The facility was idled in March in response to the slump in demand linked with the coronavirus pandemic. It will now remain idled until further notice.
The company announced at the beginning of September the intention to restart the BF, together with other relaunches of idled capacities in Spain and northern France. ArcelorMittal did not give reasons for the restart postponement, but unions believe it is linked with economic reasons. In recent weeks numerous market observers have called for EU steelmakers to avoid rushing to restart idled blast furnaces as the market remains uncertain.
According to a recent calculation published by UBS bank, 20 blast furnaces were idled in Europe, mainly in response to the Covid-19 emergency. Slightly more than a third are being restarted.
