ArcelorMittal in de race voor Franse staalfabriek
ArcelorMittal is samen met enkele andere staalbedrijven in de race voor een overname van een fabriek in het Franse Hayange. Dit schreef de Franse krant Le Figaro maandag.

Naast ArcelorMittal zou het volgens de krant gaan om British Steel, Liberty Steel, Greybull, Saarstahl en Jindal.

Er zou voor het einde van de zomer een besluit worden genomen over de toekomst van de fabriek. De krant meldt dat de Franse minister van Financiën het liefst een combinatie met Ascoval ziet, dat onderdeel is van Greybull.

Groei Chinese industrie sterkt aan

De Chinese industrie is in juni verder hersteld en liet zelfs een versnelling in zijn groei zien. Dit bleek woensdag uit cijfers van Markit en Caixin.

De inkoopmanagersindex voor de industrie steeg van 50,7 in mei naar 51,2 in juni.

Cijfers van het Chinese bureau voor de statistiek wezen dinsdag ook al op een lichte groeiversnelling voor de industrie. De officiële index liep op van 50,6 in mei naar 50,9 in juni.

Een indexstand groter dan 50 wijst op groei, terwijl minder dan 50 krimp betekent.

China’s net exports hit eight-year low
In May, China’s net exports of steel fell to their lowest level since February 2012. Imports of both semi-finished and finished steel are increasing, while high prices have reduced exports.
In May, China’s net exports slumped -52.9% month-on-month and -51.1% year-on-year to 2.274 million tonnes, detailed customs data show. That came as exports fell -30.36% m-o-m and -23.4% y-o-y to 4.401mt, while imports increased 43.3% m-o-m and 94.4% y-o-y to 2.127mt.
China’s record-high demand in the second quarter was driven by support for the economic recovery after Covid-19 ravaged the economy in Q1. May exports to Southeast Asia were down -35.4% m-o-m and -31.2% y-o-y to 1.289mt. Exports to East Asia, meanwhile, fell -21.4% m-o-m and -12.9% y-o-y to 878,497t.
That same domestic demand recovery has also led to a surge in imports, which were at their highest since December, and the second highest since September 2009. Semi-finished imports were a key driver, up 77.4% m-o-m and 654% y-o-y at 847,852t. Southeast Asia remains the largest supplier of semis, up 80.1% m-o-m and 312.5% y-o-y at 308,751t, largely from Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Russian billet helped drive imports from the CIS up over 10,000% y-o-y to 295,144t. Indian material is now also starting to show up in the data.
Long product imports also surged 102.1% m-o-m and 263% y-o-y to 416,732t in May. That trade has been dominated by Southeast Asia, which saw shipments of finished longs to China grow 241.3% m-o-m and over 12,000% y-o-y to 298,345t. Imports from Malaysia alone were up 245% m-o-m and over 43,600% y-o-y to 297,308t.

ArcelorMittal wil miljarden investeren in India
ArcelorMittal is van plan om 200 miljard roepies, omgerekend circa 2,4 miljard euro, te investeren in een capaciteitsuitbreiding en in de infrastructuur in de Indiase staat Gujarat. Dit meldde The Economic Times donderdag op basis van uitspraken van topman Lakshmi Mittal.

De investering zal worden gebruikt voor een ruimtelijke herindeling en het verbeteren van het haven- en spoornetwerk, zo liet Mittal volgens de Indiase krant weten in een videoconferentie met minister Vijay Rupani van Gujarat.

Ook wil ArcelorMittal 50 miljard roepies investeren om de capaciteit van een staalfabriek van Essar uit te breiden tot 8,6 miljoen ton per jaar.

ArcelorMittal Italia extends layoffs on drop in orders
ArcelorMittal Italia has asked to extend temporary layoffs for a further four weeks through July as negotiations continue with the government over the future of the former Ilva, Kallanish learns from sources close to the company.
According to a union representative, the company said in a letter to workers that an extension is necessary due to the decline in orders in the current post-pandemic steel market.
In June approximately 3,100 direct employees were laid off at Taranto, while 3,800 employees remain working on site together with approximately 2,200 contractor workers. Ilva employs 10,700 workers in total.
Unions have argued the use of the furlough scheme is unlawful and have not agreed to the extension. ArcelorMittal Italia declined to comment.
The Italian government is working on defining the size of the public investment intended to help ArcelorMittal relaunch the former Ilva.
ArcelorMittal has in recent weeks become more inclined to negotiate to keep its Italian investment

German steel firms seek more railway privatisation
Germany’s steel industry has asked for more railway services in addition to the state-owned Deutsche Bahn, says national steel federation WV Stahl. The country’s transportation policy has for too long held on to the system of state-owned railways, says Achim Beerheide, WV Stahl’s expert for transport and traffic matters. “For too long, policymakers did not invest sufficiently to meet the demand for an efficient railway system and its infrastructure,” Beerheide observes.
In line with this complaint, the governing CDU party in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has emphasised its commitment to improved railway services, Kallanish notes. In an interview with steel users’ federation WSM, a CDU spokesman said the party supports efforts by DB as well as by providers not owned by the state. “If we provide a good infrastructure, companies will use it to move their freight. That’s why investments in infrastructure are always investments into business and the economy,” he commented.
Together with WV Stahl, he has called for a re-instigation of idled connections as well as for the maintenance of existing connections. “Since 2018, we have been increasingly committed to support private railway providers in their ambitions to maintain and expand their grids,” he said.
He highlighted the importance of a good connection between NRW and the ZARA ports – Zeebrugge, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp. This includes an expansion of the so-called Betuwe train line for ore transports from the Dutch border to Oberhausen. Other important routes for NRW he named are the connection from Münster to Lünen and the “Hansa” line along the A1 autobahn.
