(Reuters) - A court-appointed mediator on Monday said Bayer AG has made "substantial progress" toward resolving tens of thousands of remaining claims that its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer.
The mediator Kenneth Feinberg spoke at a Zoom hearing in San Francisco federal court, where a judge still oversees nearly 2,000 unresolved cases over glyphosate-based Roundup, which Bayer acquired with its purchase of Monsanto. Other cases are in state courts.

"We're not there yet but we are certainly making substantial progress," said Feinberg, who oversaw compensation programs for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. "It's just a question of when and how quickly they'll get resolved."

(Reuters) - A federal judge has rejected Bayer AG's proposed $648 million settlement of class-action litigation by cities and other claimants over contamination from polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, made by the former Monsanto Co.

In a Nov. 25 decision, U.S. District Judge Fernando Olguin in Los Angeles said the accord appeared "overly broad" because it could shield Bayer from future claims, and require the settling plaintiffs to indemnify Bayer against those claims.

Olguin also said most of the 2,528 class members stood to receive "very modest" payments of just $15,000 to $30,000, making the indemnification provision "troubling."

Bayer, which bought Monsanto for $63 billion in 2018, said in a statement it would work with the plaintiffs to address Olguin's concerns, and was confident it would reach a revised preliminary settlement by the Dec. 31 deadline he set.

Los Angeles County and the cities of San Diego, Baltimore and Portland, Oregon are among the plaintiffs, which came from 36 U.S. states. The payout was to include $550 million for class members and up to $98 million for legal fees and expenses.

The German company announced the settlement in June, when it also proposed paying roughly $12 billion to resolve litigation tied to Monsanto.

Most of that was to resolve claims that Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller caused cancer. Bayer has said Roundup is safe for human use.

PCBs were once used widely to insulate electrical equipment, and also used in such products as carbonless copy paper, caulking, floor finish and paint. They were outlawed by the U.S. government in 1979 after being linked to cancer and other health problems. Monsanto produced PCBs from 1935 to 1977.

The case is City of Long Beach et al v. Monsanto Co, U.S. District Court, Central District of California, No. 16-03493.

Bayer ontwikkelt middel van Atara tegen solide tumoren
Bayer gaat kandidaatmedicijnen tegen longkanker en andere solide tumoren ontwikkelen, op basis van de T-cel immunotherapie van Atara Biotherapeutics. Dat maakten de twee bedrijven zondag bekend.

De licentie-overeenkomst betreft onder andere de kandidaatmiddelen ATA3271 en ATA2271.

Atara, genoteerd aan Nasdaq, krijgt een eenmalige betaling vooraf van Bayer van 60 miljoen dollar en tot 610 miljoen dollar in de vorm van mijlpaalbetalingen bij de ontwikkeling, goedkeuring en commerciële verkoop, plus royalties die kunnen oplopen tot meer dan 10 procent van de omzet.

We zitten aan 49 EUR.
Net voor de crisis zaten we aan 75 EUR, en een paar jaar terug zelfs aan 120 EUR.
Nog een hele weg te gaan dus. 60 a 70 EUR moet mogelijk zijn de komende 12 tot 24 maanden.

CureVac en Bayer slaan de handen ineen voor de ontwikkeling van een coronavaccin. Dit maakten beide Duitse bedrijven donderdag bekend, zonder financiële details te vermelden.

Bayer stelt in deze samenwerking zijn kennis, ervaring en infrastructuur ter beschikking.

Het doel is een vaccin tegen COVID-19 te ontwikkelen met een omvang die goed is voor enkele honderden miljoenen doses. "De behoefte hieraan is enorm."

De Duitse farmagroep Bayer zal de ontwikkeling en de aanvoer van het kandidaat-coronavaccin van het Duitse biotechbedrijf CureVac ondersteunen. Financiële details over de krachtenbundeling zijn er niet.

Het Duitse biotechbedrijf CureVac, dat een kandidaat-coronavaccin ontwikkelt, heeft ingestemd met een alliantie met het farmabedrijf Bayer. Dat maken beide bedrijven donderdag bekend. Financiële details over de samenwerking worden niet vrijgegeven.


Bayer zal zijn farma-expertise en -infrastructuur inzetten voor de verdere ontwikkeling van het mRNA-vaccin van CureVac. Beide partijen willen CureVac via de krachtenbundeling in staat stellen wereldwijd honderden miljoenen vaccins te verdelen na de goedkeuring ervan door de geneesmiddelenautoriteiten.


CureVac, dat zijn kandidaat-vaccin onder meer test in het UZ Gent, begon medio december met een grootschalige fase 2b/3 klinische studie wereldwijd, die uiteindelijk 35.000 deelnemers wil tellen verspreid over sites in Europa en Zuid-Amerika.


De Europese Commissie sloot in november een deal met CureVac voor de aankoop van 405 miljoen dosissen.

Bayer issues senior bonds with a volume of 4 billion euros

BERLIN, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Bayer , the German life
sciences group, said on Thursday it had placed an offering of
senior bonds with a volume of 4 billion euros ($4.91 billion)
with institutional investors.
The bonds were issued in four tranches with volumes of
between 0.8 and 1.2 billion euros, and maturities of 4, 8, 10.5
and 15 years, the company said in a statement. Coupons on the
paper wee 0.05%, 0.375%, 0.625% and 1% respectively.
