San Francisco-based Ripple has not had the best of starts to 2018. Its cryptocurrency, XRP, has been on a downward slide since the first week of January and has lost almost 70% of its value. However, things could be about to turn around for the company as Western Union is now test driving its transfer technology.

The list of banks and financial institutions that are using and testing Ripple’s products is growing by the week. Fortune has reported that global payments giant Western Union can be added to that list this week. CFO Raj Agrawal told media that efforts were in a ‘testing phase’ and there was nothing so far in the process that would be a ‘big unlock.’

EXPANDING PARTNERSHIPS

Regardless, it is still a huge boost for the blockchain company that has seen the price of its cryptocurrency plummet in recent months. On Tuesday, CEO Hikmet Ersek told analysts that Western Union is experimenting with Ripple and XRP for settling transactions and for capital optimization. The move comes a month after Ripple’s dealings with rival company Moneygram, which was also testing XRP transfers.

Ripple has made more progress with partners than any other cryptocurrency. Just last week, it signed a deal with foreign exchange giant UAE Exchange, and it has also made moves into the Chinese online shopping market. The Asian arm of the company, SBI Ripple Asia, has made a lot of headway with Japanese and South Korean banks in adopting blockchain solutions for money transfers.

RIPPLE PROVIDING THE PRODUCTS

Ripple has two primary products: xCurrent, which over 100 financial institutions are currently using, and xRapid, which is based on XRP. This is the one that Western Union is now testing. A Ripple spokesperson tells Yahoo Finance:

We’ve been testing different products with Western Union for a while. We’re excited about our work towards a pilot implementation of xRapid, which uses XRP in payment flows.
Western Union CTO Sheri Rhodes told media:

We continue to explore possible blockchain applications for our business, and we are piloting some settlement tests with Ripple for certain corridors. For blockchain in general, we’re looking at areas such as transaction processing and settlement, working capital optimization, regulatory technology, and digital identity.
XRP is up 10% in the past 24 hours but has yet to take off on the news and is currently trading around the $1.15 mark. Almost 50% of the global trade is in South Korean won on major exchanges in the country. Market capacity is $45 billion, and it is the third most popular cryptocurrency.

RIPPLE SIGNS MAJOR DEAL WITH SAUDIA ARABIA’S CENTRAL BANK

Ripple, the third largest cryptocurrency by market cap, has been on a tear lately, and it has now signed a significant deal with Saudi Arabia’s central bank.

RIPPLE RAPIDLY GAINING TRACTION

Ripple continues to make inroads into the traditional financial sector. It has recently announced a massive deal with the UAE Exchange and a major partnership with Lianlian International. Additionally, Banco Santander is set to roll out Ripple payments in Q1, and just today came the news that Western Union will begin testing XRP transfers.

According to reports, Saudi Arabia’s central bank has penned a deal with the San Francisco-based cryptocurrency company, which aims to help banks in the oil-rich kingdom settle instantaneous cross-border payments using blockchain software. Specifically, Saudi Arabia will utilize xCurrent, Ripple’s enterprise software solution facilitating such payments with end-to-end tracking.

Saudi Arabia’s deal with the cryptocurrency company is the first such blockchain-utilizing pilot program launched by a central bank. Dilip Rao, Ripple’s global head of infrastructure innovation, says:

Central banks around the world are leaning into blockchain technology in recognition of how it can transform cross-border payments, resulting in lower barriers to trade and commerce for both corporates and consumers.
Saudi Arabia’s partnership with the virtual currency company comes after Gulf regulators have expressed concerns over Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market’s lack of regulation. Thus, Ripple has, unsurprisingly, proven itself to be an attractive offer.

Ripple Shoots Up After AMEX Deal and Secret US Bank Meeting

Unlike Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies that are largely founded on the premises of deregulation and decentralization, Ripple has openly marketed itself as a blockchain solution for traditional financial institutions. In turn, the cryptocurrency has long come under criticism for undermining what some consider to be the very foundations of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.

Drawing further skepticism from investors is the fact that the vast majority of XRP tokens are owned by Ripple’s parent company, thus making it technically capable of regulating the price of said tokens.

XRP saw highs around $3.84 on January 4th but has since fallen as low as $0.59. It is currently trading at $1.12.

In December, UAE central bank governor Mubarak Rashed al-Mansouri also told Reuters that the central banks of both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are working together in hopes of issuing a digital currency that would help facilitate cross-border transactions between the two countries.

Bron De Tijd

Ripple Adds 5 New Clients Across 4 Countries
NEWS
Nikhilesh De

Feb 21, 2018 at 15:05 UTC | Updated Feb 21, 2018 at 15:09 UTC
Distributed ledger startup Ripple has today announced new partnerships with five banking and money transfer institutions across four different countries.

Going forward, the two banks - Itaú Unibanco from Brazil and IndusInd from India - along with money remittance companies InstaReM from Singapore, Beetech from Brazil and Zip Remit from Canada, will be adopting different Ripple platforms to facilitate real-time international payments, according to a press release.

While Beetech and Zip Remit plan to use Ripple's xVia product to facilitate international payment corridors aimed at individual customers, IndusInd, InstaReM and Itaú Unibanco plan to use xCurrent for real-time international transactions to financial institutions, according to Finextra.

In addition, both Beetech and Zip Remit plan to ultimately create a working relationship with China-based LianLian, which recently began using xCurrent.

The move will also help Ripple, said InstaReM CEO Prajit Nanu, as the blockchain startup's other members will now be able to take advantage of the payment company's growing network.

"Now, RippleNet members will be able to process a large number of payouts in Southeast Asian countries through InstaReM's secure rails," he said.

Ripple's head of business development, Patrick Griffin, added that the new partnerships will particularly assist customers in emerging markets, explaining:

"Whether it's a teacher in the U.S. sending money home to his family in Brazil or a small business owner in India trying to move money to open up a second store in another country, it's imperative that we connect the world's financial institutions into a payments system that works for their customers, not against them."
